1962: Application was made and approved for a proposed change of use from a private house to a hotel. The name of the hotel was not mentioned: but surely it should have been "Downend" and not "Downside" (see below) which would make for confusion with no.4 King Henry's Road.

1973: Downside Hotel, King Henry's Road, Lewes: a planning application was made for change of use to bed-sitting rooms for up to 12 persons, with common room & communal kitchen, approved in 1974. At the same time the change from a private hotel to a private residential dwelling was approved. In current terms this might be described as a house in multiple occupation (HMO).
In 1983 a planning application was submitted and approved for the conversion of the existing house to form 3 self-contained flats; and conversion of stables to form a detached house, including provision for 4 parking spaces.
In 1986 a planning application was submitted and refused for the erection of a two-storey 3-bedroomed house.
In 1988 application for the erection of a single dwelling house was approved. This would eventually become no.35 King Henry's Road.
