George Butchers married Isabella Read in Eastbourne in 1888. The family moved to Lewes from Alfriston after 1893 & before Ernest was born in Lewes in 1895. In 1901 the family were living at 69 New Road.

Ernest Wilfred (26) motor mechanic; Harold Read (20) textile fitter - currently unemployed; Reginald (18) a clerk with ESCC; Isabella Marjorie (12) at school; Edna May (10) at school; Donald Charles (7) at school.
[It would seem that Mrs Butchers managed without any extra help in this large household.]

George Frederick Butchers: Trooper 1761. Household Battalion, Formerly Sussex Yeomanry. Killed in action near Arras 3 May 1917. Aged 29. Resident of "Cairn Reigh" Wallands, Lewes. Son of Mr & Mrs George Butchers of Thetford, Norfolk. Born in Alfriston and enlisted in Lewes. SA. SJ. Buried in Roeux British Cemetery.
