The first owner of this plot of land, part of the Wallands Park Estate, was the builder Henry Card. He sold no.1 King Henry's Road, known as "The Lodge", to Montague Spencer Blaker in 1883 for £1,831. However the Blaker family are not recorded as living there until the 1901 Census.

Henry Card sold another (adjacent) plot of land to Montague Blaker for £500 in 1884. Building plans for one dwelling house on this plot were applied for, and approved, in October 1885, but it seems this plot was destined to provide stabling and a coach house for Montague Blaker’s household. See Plan dated 1911.
On the north was the road from Offham to London, and on the south side "a new road called King Henry's Road". West lay a piece of land used as a garden by William Whitcomb. The plot lay within the parish of St John sub Castro.

No photo is available. The Lodge was demolished in 1982 [?] to make way for Queen Anne's Close (9 houses) in 1983.

Owners & Occupiers:
In 1881 Montague Blaker & family (his wife Katherine & baby Sybil) were living in the parish of All Saints. In 1891 this family were living in no.211 High Street, still in All Saints parish. By then they had 5 children: Sybil A (10), Sylvia K (8), Harold M (7), Ida M (4) and Flora F (1). 4 servants were needed to run the household. By 1901 the family have moved to King Henry's Road.

1891 Census: The Lodge does not appear to be in the enumerator's schedule for King Henry's Road, unless it is the entry designated as "All Saints' Rectory". This entry sits between "The Limes" otherwise 1 Prince Edward's Road, and "Wickham"- the first (& only other) house on the north side of King Henry's Road. As the Blaker family were then living in the Parish of All Saints, it is possible that Montague Blaker decided to rent out his new property to the Church.

1901 Census: Montague Blaker (60) Solicitor; his wife Katharine (51) and four of his five children: Sibyl A Blaker (20), [Sylvia (18) absent], Harold M (17) and Ida Mary (14), & Flora Frances (11); two servants: Rose Salvage (26) housemaid, and Harriett Nye (22) parlourmaid, both from Lewes.

1911 Census: Montague Spencer Blaker (70) Solicitor; his wife Katharine Louisa (61) and four of his five children: Sibyl Amelia Blaker (30), Harold Montague (27), Ida Mary (24), Flora Frances (21), and three general servants: Elsie Penfold (27) from Iford, Clara Lulham (30) from Herstmonceux & Emily Booth (23) from Ringmer.

Montague Blaker m. Katharine Louise Beard in 1878: his age 37 her age 29.
Sibyl Amelia Blaker m. Richard S Sandford in 1927 in Lewes: her age 46 his age 60.
Richard S Sandford died in 1935 in Cuckfield aged 68.

1921 Census:No family members appear to be at home. Mrs Katharine Blaker (71) with her daughters Sibyl (40) and Flora (31) are staying at the Endcliffe Hotel, Cliftonville, near Margate, Kent, presumably on holiday. None of the servants who were there in 1911, remain.

1939 Register: Katharine L Blaker (90) widow; her daughters: Ida M Blaker (53) and Flora F Blaker (50); one boarder: Florence M Donovan (55) Elementary Teacher; one record "officially closed" possibly of a servant.

In 1972 a planning application was made for conversion of the stable block to a 3-bedroomed single dwelling. This was approved in January 1973.

In 1974 application was made and refused for a residential development of 27 two-bedroomed flats. In the same year application was made and refused for a residential development of 24 two-bedroomed flats. Another similar application was made in 1975 and approved, but not put into action.

In 1977 an outline application was made and refused for 12 three-bedroomed town houses, and 4 two-bedroomed single storey houses, with integral garaging. In the same year a further outline application was made and approved for 5 three-bedroomed town houses, and 7 four-bedroomed houses, but not put into action.
In 1979 an application was submitted & approved for a proposed layout of 6 detached houses & a terrace of 5 houses: again we should be grateful that this plan was not put into action.
In 1980 a new planning application was made & approved for 11 houses with garages and an access way.
In 1981 an application was submitted & approved for the erection of 3 detached dwellings together with garages, but not put into action.
